Summary module description:

This module introduces students to advanced microeconometric techniques, focusing on causality and treatment effects. The module will build on topics covered in ECM607A and students will be expected to have knowledge of these. The module considers how to select and apply econometric techniques for research. In addition students will develop their econometric software skills using Stata.

Aims:

The aim of this module is to provide students with a more extensive knowledge and understanding of microeconometric methods for causal inference, especially applying the taught techniques for research. Secondly the module will teach students how to apply these econometric techniques, using the statistical package Stata

Assessable learning outcomes:

By the end of the module students should:

1. have a good understanding and knowledge of causal inference;


2. be able to devise an identification strategy;


3. be able to perform their own data analysis using the statistical package Stata;


4. be able to critically evaluate methods and approaches chosen by research papers

Students will develop their research and data handling skills.Ìý

Outline content:

Topics will focus on causality and treatment effects.

Brief description of teaching and learning methods:

The module follows a blended learning approach. Students will be provided with pre-recorded lectures and other resources so students can follow them at their own pace, with weekly applied workshops including computer based exercises and discussion of research papers. Students will be required to watch the pre-recorded videos in advance of workshops, and expected to prepare for the workshops and do any required reading.Ìý

Summative assessment- Examinations:

Summative assessment- Coursework and in-class tests:

There will be one assignment due in shortly after the module finishes.

Formative assessment methods:

There will be computer exercises for each topic, students are expected to attempt these prior to class and complete them after class.
