Ceasefire needed to get aid to Myanmar - Expert Comment

Professor Rosa Freedman (Law) said: “Yesterday the military junta announced that it would hold free and fair elections in Myanmar after years of conflict and violence. Today, an earthquake has caused severe destruction in the country. Delivering humanitarian aid is complex and challenging in such circumstances.
“An immediate ceasefire would to allow humanitarian corridors to deliver relief and aid to those who need it most. The international community must work with the local actors who can reach those regions. Specialist teams could go in to ensure that this latest disaster does not become a smokescreen for further grave abuses against local communities.”
