Helena Augustine successfully secured a graduate role during her final year of studying BSc Consumer Behaviour and Marketing with Placement. This was a result of her hard work during her placement year, commitment to her studies and resilience that she developed at 51ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø.

Why 51ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø?

Keen to pursue a career in marketing, Helena chose 51ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø because she believed it gave her the ideal blend of study options.

“The course gave me the perfect balance of marketing and psychology. I’m particularly interested in consumer behaviour as it provides insights into the psychology of marketing – the how and why people make purchasing decisions.

As a result, I have really enjoyed the creative elements of marketing and being challenged to come up ideas and solutions to industry issues.

51ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø stood out for several other reasons too. I hadn’t seen any other universities offering such a course. The Whiteknights campus is a great place to be as it has all the facilities a student could need and is close to a town with a big shopping centre and plenty of places to go out or eat. It is also surrounded by some lovely places such as Henley-on-Thames and Windsor.”

Personal Growth

Helena believes she has gained personal growth from the opportunities available to her while at 51ºÚÁϳԹÏÍø.

“I have enjoyed my independence and the social aspects of student life, but have also embraced the responsibility and my resilience to commit to my studies.

In my second year, I became a course representative, and acted as a voice for my peers, offering feedback from a student perspective. It was a good personal development experience, as I learned new leadership skills that I was able to add to my CV and discuss at interviews.”

Placement Year

Helena’s placement year gave her the opportunity to learn new skills and presented her with new career opportunities.

“My placement year at Kenvue (formerly Johnson & Johnson) has given me invaluable insight into the corporate world, providing me with opportunities and challenges to push my potential and develop my professional experience.

My day-to-day activities included leadership across social media, website and content creation, budget management, brand performance analysis, digital marketing support, PR, influence and partnerships support.

Highlights for me included designing Johnson’s Baby new Amazon storefront, creating two brand new Amazon exclusive product bundles, assisting in the Johnson’s Baby “A Parent is Born” campaign, creating advertising content to promote the new series, and leading Aveeno Baby’s “Project Oculus”, a campaign to create audio content to describe products to aid individuals who are blind or partially sighted on the Aveeno Baby website.

It was great to have a sense of responsibility for the UK’s leading Baby toiletries brands, as well as being able to work with experienced Consumer Health industry professionals.”

 Your Career Starts Here

The knowledge gained on the course, coupled with Helena’s practical experience on placement has set her on the road to a success.

“I am very pleased to have secured a graduate role at Kenvue following my placement year with them, which means that I can go straight into the next step of my career following graduation.

I hope to gain experience in a few more areas of business, but, would eventually like to work in management and leadership roles within the field of marketing.

I would highly recommend doing a placement year. It provides you with excellent work experience, which increases your employability after you graduate. It is also a great opportunity to meet people who will support you throughout your career!”
